From the brain to the belly, live the vagal nerves - the main nerves responsible for our parasympathetic nervous system. As a co-regulating species, the condition of our grown-up nervous system sets the stage for our classroom climate. Science says: Energy is the ability to do work, and emotion is energy in motion. When we experience a feeling or trauma, it becomes stored in the body unless we express it through movement. Inspired by Dr. Marc Brackett’s Mood Meter, we have taken this concept to the next level! Created through a child development and neuroscience lens, participants will experience creative ways to engage kids in important stages of emotional learning. We will connect yoga to the body’s sensory systems, learn how to use The Move Meter to help children identify, notice, and move through their big feelings, and embody poses & breathwork geared towards building healthy school year routines. At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
● Understand the basics of our nervous system and brain science
● Identify the four quadrants of the Mood Meter and the Move Meter
● Guide students through developmentally appropriate yoga poses
● Use yoga as a responsive teaching technique to support self-regulation, classroom management, and community building
